Compost has arrived!

Garden soil fertility is very important on our farm. We grow intensively and that takes a lot of fertility out of the soil. To replace that fertility we could spray or broadcast chemical fertilizer but that would defeat our objectives for our farm. I have tried creating our own compost from manure from neighboring farms but the transportation of it and the need to turn it regularly without a tractor proved very difficult.

I may have overloaded the truck just a bit. 4 tons on a 2 ton truck.... Glad she is still in one piece! We have a local landfill that composts the school lunches. It is very inexpensive if you have the means to haul it. Offloading the compost is another challenge altogether! The below picture is after a cold & snowy night of offloading compost by head lamp. The things we do to stay healthy and grow good food... If you can't tell by the color of the dirt on our faces. This is the color of good soil, black.

Cassie thought she should be allowed in the house without taking her shoes off.
